20 Self-Love Affirmations to Build Self Esteem

August 15, 2022

Do you doubt yourself or believe you have low self-esteem? Do you lack confidence?

Are you willing to consider self-love as a prescription for self-acceptance?  If so, these affirmations are exactly what you need. They are designed to help you build self-love. When you love yourself, everything becomes easier.

We are often too critical about ourselves; how we look, what we wear, the number of likes on social media, and the list goes on. You can help stop comparison and self-criticism by practicing affirmations daily.

What Are Affirmations?

Affirmations are positive statements that rewire the way you think about yourself and are at the root of positive self-talk. They help you see the good in yourself. The more you practice affirmations, the more they become a habit and build your mind to look at the positive side of yourself and the situations around you.  Affirmations help you put in the effort to stay true to your beliefs. It is acting like you already have that which you desire to have; confidence, a new job, a healthy body, and so on.

Affirmations work when said with belief. A study states, “When threatened, self-affirmations can restore self-competence by allowing individuals to reflect on sources of self-worth, such as core values.”

The human brain adapts to situations and circumstances. Practicing affirmations daily builds muscle memory for the mind to act and behave a certain way.

How to Start Self-Love Affirmations?

Say affirmations aloud or write them in your journal. Another tip is to stand in front of a mirror and say your affirmations while making eye contact with yourself.   Think about what you want to change. Then write affirmations around the way you desire the outcome to be. Affirmations are personal, positive and present-tense, not in the future.  Believe in the affirmations while writing and speaking them. Be realistic - yet brave enough to create change and align your affirmations with your core values.  You can't do this wrong!  Below are some examples for you to use or to follow as a guideline.

Shift From Negative Thoughts to Positive Thoughts.

August 8, 2022

How to Identify Negative Thoughts

Most negative thoughts are subconscious. We are often unaware of our thought patterns. It's important to identify negative thoughts and then convert them into positive thoughts.

The first step is awareness. You have to be aware of the surroundings, the setting, the people around you, how you feel, what makes you angry, happy, and so on. It may sound daunting initially, but after increasing your awareness daily, your mind will do it semi-automatically.

Look for Signs:

The second is looking for signs. Do negative thoughts make you draw conclusions without logical thinking? Does a Google search answer make you think that you have a dreaded disease? If yes, then, it's a clue that you may be prone to reaching negative conclusions.

Self Blame:

Stop blaming yourself for outcomes that are beyond your reach. Inappropriate blaming of ourselves or others implies that everything is one way or another - black or white - without any grey areas. Not everything is within our control, so it is not necessary to take the blame or feel guilty for those scenarios.

Self Labeling Thoughts:

Labeling yourself: "I'm ugly" and "I'm such an idiot" are self-labeling thoughts. On a deeper level, we have unhelpful core beliefs like, “I am not enough”, or “I am unlovable.” These lies keep us stuck where we are and negatively impact our day-to-day lives.

Anticipating Negative Outcomes:

Some people are certain that situations might have a negative outcome in the future–and that leads to stress and anxiety. For example, you fear that might fail your upcoming exams, so rather than studying, you become stressed and avoid studying.

5 Effective Ways to Shift Your Thoughts From Negative to Positive.

Catch Yourself:

Once you're aware of negative thoughts, the next step is to catch yourself.

Stop Thinking Negatively:

After you catch yourself thinking negatively, the next step is to stop the negative chatter in your mind.  Remind yourself, “I don’t think that way anymore.”

Journaling gives you a wider picture, a top-angle view from another perspective. It assists in tracking your thoughts if you go back through your journal and look for patterns.

Appreciate Yourself:

Focus on your achievements and acts of kindness. We do not know our impact, and even the smallest actions can bring big changes in someone else's life.

Talk to a friend or trusted advisor:

When we share our thoughts with a trusted and supportive friend, counselor, coach or mentor, we release trapped thoughts and emotions.

The Bottom Line

One key to happiness is replacing negative thoughts with positive thoughts more often than not. It doesn't happen in one day. It takes time, effort, and repetition. And then more repetition! You can do it; just keep going.
